Honduras officially inaugurates embassy in occupied Jerusalem

Tegucigalpa (QNN)- Honduras has officially moved its embassy in ‘Israel’ to the occupied city of Jerusalem, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said on Thursday.

In the presence of Israel’s new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, Honduras has officially moved its embassy in ‘Israel’ to the occupied Jerusalem, making it the fourth country to open an embassy in Jerusalem, following the United States, Guatemala and Kosovo.

“We hope to continue building a solid relationship between our two countries,” Hernández tweeted after the event.

“Mr. President, you are a true friend of Israel,” Bennett told Hernández shortly before the inauguration ceremony.

“The Jewish people have a long memory, and you will be recorded in the pages of history as having done a brave and justified deed for the State of Israel.”

In 2018, outgoing President Donald Trump moved the US embassy to ‘Israel’ from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017.

Honduras recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in August 2019.

Guatemala also opened an embassy in Jerusalem in 2018, and Kosovo has lately become the third country to do so in 2021.

The European Union has always urged its member states not to open an embassy in Jerusalem, because under international law, Jerusalem is a contested city, with East Jerusalem officially considered to be occupied by ‘Israel.’

“The EU’s position on relocating embassies to Jerusalem is clear. All the embassies of the EU member states, as well as the EU Delegation to Israel, are located in Tel Aviv,” EU says.
