Zohran Mamdani Becomes New York’s First Muslim Mayor: How the World Reacts

New York (QNN)- Zohran Mamdani has won New York City’s mayoral election, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor. At 34, the democratic socialist is also the youngest person to hold the office in a century.

Following his win, the Democrat spoke directly to Trump, a New Yorker, saying it is the city that gave rise to him that will show the country how to defeat him.

“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!” Mamdani said.

He also told the Republican, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

His remarks came after Trump threatened to cut federal funding to New York if he won. Trump also suggested that the poor showing for Republicans was down to his not being on the ballot and the ongoing government shutdown.

When Mamdani is sworn in as New York City’s mayor on January 1, the 34-year-old state lawmaker from Queens will be the youngest person to hold the office in a century.

Mamdani will also be New York’s first Muslim mayor and the first person of South Asian descent to lead the city in its 400-year history.

Mamdani’s views on Israel’s war on Gaza, which he has described as genocide, have mobilised both supporters and opponents.

He told Mehdi Hasan that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he entered New York City. “As mayor, New York City would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani said in December 2024. “This is a city that our values are in line with international law. It’s time that our actions are also.”

His vocal support of Palestinians, his position against Israeli occupation as he has also said he would review any Israel-linked investments made by the city, and his criticism of Israel have driven pro-Israelis to label him as antisemitic.

Taking to social media, pro-Palestinian, Muslim, and Jewish people have celebrated Mamdani’s victory.

“This is a win for America, Muslims, and Palestine. A massive slap to Israel and American Islamophobes,” Robert Carter wrote on X.

“Palestine wasn’t a risk in Mamdani’s campaign, it was the reason he won,” Nerdeen Kiswani said.
