“You are clearly a Zionist”: Biden Reaffirms Zionist Allegiance During Oval Office Meeting with Israeli President

Washington DC (Quds News Network)- US President Joe Biden hosted Israeli President Isaac Herzog at the White House for their fourth face-to-face encounter since Biden’s election. The meeting, once again, underscored Biden’s unlimited support for Israel even as the latter continues to carry out a genocide in Gaza.

The Oval Office exchange was full of mutual praise, with Herzog expressing profound gratitude on behalf of the occupation state of Israel. “I’m here on behalf of the people of Israel and the State of Israel to say to you, Mr. President, thank you very much. As we say in Hebrew, ‘Todah Rabah,’” Herzog stated. He lauded Biden as a steadfast ally, emphasizing, “We will never forget how you stood with us in our darkest hour… your words and deeds solidified your great legacy.”

Biden, in return, reiterated his long-standing support for Israel, even once again declaring, “You don’t have to be a Jew to be a Zionist.” The statement drew applause from Herzog, who responded, “You are clearly a Zionist, Mr. President.” The two leaders exchanged a smile, with Biden adding, “God loves you,” as they shook hands.

However, Biden’s overt embrace of Zionism, especially amid growing calls for justice for Palestinians, has sparked backlash. Anti-genocide activists argue that Biden’s unlimited support for Israel, particularly in the wake of its ongoing genocide in Gaza, reflects an American involvement in the war crimes committed against Palestinians.

A Symbolic Gift with Controversial Undertones
The meeting was further marked by Herzog’s symbolic presentation of a piece from Al-Aqsa Mosque inscribed with the name “Joseph.” The reference to the biblical figure was intended to signify Biden’s perceived role in “strengthening Israel,” according to Herzog. However, the gesture struck a nerve, given the ongoing tensions over Israel’s encroachments on Palestinian religious sites, particularly Al-Aqsa mosque, which holds deep significance for Muslims worldwide.
Herzog’s gift and the Biblical allusion were seen by many as yet another attempt to align Biden’s presidency with the religious and historical narratives used to justify Israel’s crimes in the region. This move not only undermines the calls for protecting Palestinian rights but also normalizes the occupation of Jerusalem’s sacred sites.

Biden’s Zionist Stance Alienates Progressives
Biden’s repeated affirmation that “You don’t have to be a Jew to be a Zionist” underscores his deep-rooted ideological support for Israel, which has been a hallmark of his political career. While this sentiment aligns him with staunchly pro-Israel segments of the American electorate, it has alienated progressives and Arab Americans who are increasingly critical of Israel’s actions, particularly across Palestine. This has resulted in a resounding defeat for the Democrats in the latest presidential election.

Human rights organizations have stated that the Biden administration has been turning a blind eye to Israel’s crimes in Gaza and the West Bank, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties, including children. Progressive lawmakers, activists, and international observers have urged the US to leverage its influence to hold Israel accountable for its actions, rather than offering unconditional support.

Trump’s Swift Diplomatic Moves

Meanwhile, President-elect Trump wasted no time in explaining his policy. He announced the appointment of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as the new US ambassador to Israel. Huckabee, a known advocate for Israel and an outspoken supporter of its anti-Palestinian policies, is set to replace Biden’s envoy with a clear mandate to deepen US-Israel ties.

“Mike has been a great public servant, Governor, and Leader in Faith for many years,” Trump declared in a statement. “He loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!”
