Wife of hunger-striking prisoner says his condition is worsening

Jenin (QNN)- The wife of the prisoner Maher Al Akhras said that her husband’s condition is getting worse on his 76th day of the hunger strike that he has been through in protest against his administrative detention.

Taghreed Al Akhras told QNN that he suffers from headaches, stomach aches, body aches, and he cannot speak normally.

She added that he is determined to continue the strike until the Israelis end his administrative detention, noting that he rejected all Israeli offers to end the strike stressing that all he wants is freedom.

Al Akhras stressed that she herself also continues to go on a hunger strike in solidarity with her husband.

“My aim is to support Maher in his battle with the occupation”, she said. “I called on different institutions but I haven’t gotten any response supporting Maher’s just cause. However, our best bet is the free Palestinian people, especially former prisoners, who protested at the headquarter of the Red Cross in solidarity with Maher.”

Israel’s widely condemned practice of administrative detention allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing.

There are about 4,500 Palestinian and Arab political prisoners serving sentences in Israeli detention for resisting the prolonged Israeli occupation of their homeland. Of those, there are some 350 detainees held in prison as administrative detainees, without a charge or trial including minors and elderly.
