Wide-range survey: 88% of Arabs reject their countries’ recognition of ‘Israel’

47% of the respondents in Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq said that Israel is the main threat to their countries.

Doha (QNN)- Arab Center for Research & Policy Studies (ACRPS) in Doha announced on Tuesday the results of The 2019-20 Arab Opinion Index, revealing that 88% of citizens in the Arab region reject to recognize ‘Israel’.

The survey has revealed a significant discord between popular sentiments and government rhetoric on the question of Palestine specifically in Saudi Arabia and Sudan, where the political elite has been making overtures to Israel recently.

Three quarters of the survey’s 28,000 respondents said they thought the Palestinian cause concerns all Arabs, not just Palestinians, however this rose to 89% among respondents in Saudi Arabia, the second highest among the countries surveyed.

Meanwhile, an overwhelming majority of Arabs – 88% according to the survey – disapprove of their government recognising Israel. Just 6% of respondents said they would accept formal diplomatic recognition.

Notably, only 13% of Sudanese respondents were in favour of their country recognising Israel, with 79% rejecting such a move. Meanwhile, 0% of Algerians said that they would accept normalization.

Those who were against recognizing ‘Israel’ explained their position based on several factors, most of them are related to the colonial, racist, and expansionist nature of the occupation state.

When asked about the greatest threat to the Arab world, 66% of Arab public opinion considered that ‘Israel’ and the United States combined are the main threat to the Arab countries. 89% of Arabs believe that Israel poses a threat to the security and stability of the region, while 81% believes that the United States poses a threat to the security and stability of the region.

The results of the survey come during a race between non-elected Arab regimes to normalize relations with the occupation state.
