What Do Americans Think of Trump’s Gaza ‘Take Over’ Plan?
Washington (Quds News Network)- A recent survey by the Pew Research Center reveals that most Americans believe the U.S. should not attempt to “take over” Gaza following President Donald Trump’s controversial plan to “own” the Palestinian enclave by forcibly displacing its population without granting them the right to return.
Trump had previously proposed permanently and forcibly displacing Palestinians from Gaza and transforming the area into what he called the “Riviera of the Middle East.” His plan envisioned a developed, Palestinian-free zone under US control and ownership, where “the world’s people” could reside.
He also suggested that Jordan and Egypt take in displaced Palestinians, a proposal that both countries firmly rejected. Palestinians in Gaza have rejected the proposal while Arab nations have backed Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents. The proposal would violate international law and has been described as “tantamount to ethnic cleansing” by the UN.
The Centre surveyed 3,605 US adults in late March.
Of those surveyed, 62% of Americans opposed such a move, compared to 15% who favoured it.
Opinions were divided as to whether Trump was likely to actually pursue it. Again, the greater number (38%) thought it very or extremely unlikely.
