Watchdog: Infection of three Israeli jailers is recipe for disaster

The watchdog stressed that the Israelis continue to jail Palestinians in dangerous conditions despite of the infection of three jailers with the coronavirus

Occupied Palestine (QNN)- The Committee of Prisoners’ and Former Prisoners’ Affairs said that the detection of three coronavirus infections among Israeli jailers is a recipe for a disaster for the Palestinian prisoners.

The committee added in a statement that “amid the global spread of the epidemic, and the large numbers of cases in the occupation state, we are concerned that the virus would reach Israeli jails.”

“The Israeli Prison Service (IPS) did not take any real measures on the ground to protect the prisoners like reducing the overcrowding in jails, sanitizing the sections and cells, and providing cleaning and protection supplies for the prisoners”, the statement stated.

The committee held the IPS responsible “for the lives of the prisoners and called on international organizations and the international Red Cross to put pressure on the occupation state so that it provides all the needed measures to protect the prisoners and release elderly as well as children ad sick prisoners.”

Israeli Channel 12 had reported that three Israeli jailers in the jails of Ofer and Nitzan tested positive for coronavirus.

the occupation state holds around 5000 Palestinians in its 23 jails and interrogation centers, including 180 children, 700 sick prisoners, and 41 women.
