Indonesia, the former host country, had objected to Israel’s participation in the tournament. The Muslim-majority country underlined its support for Palestine and a two-state solution, adding that Israel’s qualification was secured long after his country won hosting rights.
In response, FIFA, the global soccer organization that runs the World Cup and its accompanying tournaments, stripped Indonesia of its hosting rights in March and moved the tournament to Argentina.
