Victims of Israel’s Attack on Gaza’s Nasser Hospital: 5 Journalists, Doctor, Rescue Worker Among 20 Killed

Gaza (Quds News Network)- At least 20 Palestinians were killed in two consecutive Israeli strikes on Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza on Monday. The victims included five journalists, a rescue worker, a medical student, and civilians.

The Palestinian Health Minsitry said, “The [Israeli] occupation forces’ targeting of the hospital today and the killing of medical personnel, journalists, and civil defense personnel is a continuation of the systematic destruction of the health system and the continuation of genocide. It is a message of defiance to the entire world and to all values of humanity and justice.”

Who are the victims?

Five journalists:

Hussam Al-Masri, a photojournalist with Reuters News Agency

Mohammed Salama, a photojournalist with Al Jazeera

Mariam Abu Daqqa, a journalist with several media outlets, including Independent Arabia and AP

Moath Abu Taha, a journalist with NBC News

Ahmed Abu Aziz, a journalist with Quds Feed

Mohammad Al-Habibi, a sixth-year medical student, just months away from graduating

Imad Al-Shaer, a civil defense firefighter driver and a father of three

What Happened?

The first attack was carried out by a suicide drone, according to local sources, hitting the upper floor of the hospital, including the roof where a couple of journalists were standing, killing al-Masri.

Reuters reported that their live video feed from the hospital, which was operated by cameraman al-Masri, suddenly shut down at the moment of the initial strike.

Then civil defence teams went up, tried to retrieve the bodies, and tried to rescue whoever was wounded. Journalists also went to cover what happened.

And then the Israeli forces targeted the same place again. Another airstrike at the same exact location and this was documented on air.

Journalists who were covering the first attack were killed and wounded. And also, the members of the Civil Defence team who were trying to retrieve the bodies of those who were killed were also killed and injured.

The three journalist, Mariam Abu Daqqa, Mohammad Salama, and Moaz Abu Taha while documenting the first attack on the hospital. They were holding their cameras before Israel targeted them.

The four other journalists who were killed in the attack are Mohammed Salama, a photojournalist with Al Jazeera, Mariam Abu Daqa, a journalist with several media outlets, including Independent Arabia and AP, Moath Abu Taha, a journalist with NBC News and Ahmed abu Aziz, a journalist with Quds Feed.

Seven civil defense members were also injured and one killed.

The two attacks resulted in the killing of a total of 20.

There have been recent appeals from news organizations, senior journalists, and several countries to protect journalists covering the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, who are also facing the threat of starvation due to the Israeli blockade on aid.

Following Monday’s attack, the Israeli military admitted it waged “a strike in the area of Nasser Hospital”, without explaining or justifying the purpose or target of the deadly attack. The short statement claimed the military “does not target journalists as such” and will investigate the attack.

Earlier this month, a targeted and deliberate Israeli strike on a media tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City killed six journalists, including well-known Al Jazeera correspondent Anad al-Sharif. The Israeli military admitted to al-Sharif’s killing, claiming, without providing any evidence, that he was leading a Hamas cell, a justification frequently used by Israel to justify the killing of journalists documenting its crimes in Gaza.

Gaza’s Government Media Office said at least 245 journalists have been killed in Israeli attacks since the start of the genocide in Ocotber 2023.
