US Vetoes Fifth Ceasefire Resolution at the UN Amid Ongoing Gaza Genocide

New York (Quds News Network)- The United States exercised its veto power at the United Nations Security Council for the fifth time this year to block a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

The resolution, supported by 14 member states, supported a previous passed resolution that sought to halt the violence, ensure the release of Israeli prisoners, and facilitate urgent humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian territory. The Us did not oppose the previous resolution.

The resolution emphasized adherence to international law, particularly regarding the treatment of detainees, and demanded unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.

It also condemned actions that could lead to the starvation of civilians, urging full compliance with international humanitarian law, including the protection of women, children, and other vulnerable groups.

Palestinian resistance factions denounced the US veto, stating that Washington is complicit in the genocide against Gaza.

Hamas described the move as evidence of direct American involvement in the aggression, holding the US accountable for Israel’s ongoing crimes.

Similarly, Islamic Jihad stated that the veto underscored America’s role in orchestrating a war of extermination. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine echoed these sentiments, stating that the US directly participates in the atrocities.

The Palestinian presidency also condemned the veto, asserting it encouraged Israel to continue its violations against Palestinians.

The US defended its decision, with Robert Wood, deputy to US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, claiming that a ceasefire to stop the genocide would “send a dangerous message to Hamas, undermining efforts to secure the release of hostages”.

Israeli officials also welcomed the veto, with Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, calling the resolution a betrayal and expressing gratitude for US support.

This marks the fifth time this year that the US has vetoed a UN resolution aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza to stop the Israeli genocide that has taken the lives of over 43,000 Palestinians so far. The rare resolutions allowed through have notably excluded calls for a lasting and unconditional ceasefire.

Since October 7, 2023, the war in Gaza has caused unprecedented devastation, with over 148,000 casualties, most of them women and children, and tens of thousands reported missing.

The destruction has plunged Gaza into one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history, marked by mass and intentional starvation, widespread displacement, and mounting fatalities.

Despite international outcry, Israel continues its assault, disregarding Security Council resolutions and International Court of Justice directives to halt the violence and address the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
