US house backs two-state resolution in rebuke of Trump

Washington (QNN)- The US House on Friday approved a resolution supporting a two-state solution in Palestine and reassuring US commitment to provide military aid to the occupation state, recording opposition to any peace plan put forth by the Trump administration that doesn’t expressly call for an independent Palestinian state living side-by-side with a Jewish state of ‘Israel’.

The resolution was non-binding, and was an expression of disapproval aimed at the Trump administration’s reversal of US policy regarding the illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank.

Only 5 Republicans backed the measure in the 226-183 vote, though 11 GOP lawmakers had joined a bipartisan amendment reaffirming US. commitments to providing military aid to the occupation state that was added to the bill.

The resolution follows criticism by Democrats of several moves by the Trump administration that they said endangered a two-state solution, including moving the US. Embassy to occupied Jerusalem, recognizing ‘Israel’s’ sovereignty over the Golan Heights and cutting the majority of US. aid to the Palestinians.

Four Democrats opposed the resolution: Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.)

Two Democrats voted “present,” including Rep. Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), who criticized the text reaffirming the US.’s “ironclad” commitment to military aid as rejecting Palestinian human rights.

Freshman congresswoman Rashida Tlaib presented her vehement opposition to HR-326, accusing the occupation state of perpetuating “inequality, ethnic discrimination, and inhumane conditions.”

Moreover, she stated that “Israel’s Nation-State law, which states that only Jews have the right to self-determination has eliminated the political rights of the Palestinian people and effectively made them second-class citizens.”

“I spoke today as the proud granddaughter of a strong, loving Palestinian woman in opposition to #HRes326. We must take bolder action to ensure human rights are upheld in Israel and that Palestinians and Black Israelis are treated with equality every human being deserves,” Rep. Tlaib wrote on Twitter Friday.
