UNRWA explained that about 3,000 trucks loaded with life-saving aid are ready to enter Gaza. However, Israel continues to block the entry of aid trucks.
Gaza’s 2.4 million residents rely almost entirely on humanitarian aid. This aid has been halted since March 2, after Israel closed the Karem Abu Salem, Zikim, and Beit Hanoun crossings.
UNRWA stressed that the “siege must be lifted.” Israel has enforced a strict blockade on Gaza for years.
The agency warned that “hunger is worsening in Gaza.” Families, including many children, are surviving on what little hot meals charitable organizations manage to distribute.
On Friday, the WFP confirmed that its food stocks in Gaza had been “completely exhausted.” No aid has entered for seven consecutive weeks, making it the longest border closure Gaza has ever experienced. The shutdown is further devastating local markets and Gaza’s already fragile food systems.
Israel resumed its genocide in Gaza on March 18, abandoning a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that had been in effect since January 19. Hamas had complied with all terms of the agreement.
Israel claims that its starvation campaign against two million Gazans aims to “pressure Hamas”. Israel’s starvation policy is a war crime, a crime against humanity, and an act of genocide according to modern international criminal law.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, backed by full U.S. support, has carried out a campaign of mass killing in Gaza. The ongoing assault has left more than 168,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them women and children. Over 11,000 people remain missing under the rubble.
