University of Birmingham adopts IHRA definition of antisemitism

University of Birmingham has adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.

Union of Jewish Students (UJS), which represents Jewish students on college and university campuses in Great Britain, announced the decision in a statement they posted on Twitter on Wednesday.

The IHRA definition has been formally adopted by the governments of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Hungary, the United States, the European Parliament and more than 30 other countries.

“The adoption of the IHRA definition will go a long way in ensuring Jewish students are safeguarded from anti-Semitism on their campus,” said UJS in the statement.

“We will continue our work in ensuring all student unions and universities in the U.K. adopt this vital and comprehensive definition.”

Lancaster, Cambridge, Manchester Metropolitan and Buckingham New universities have also recently adopted the definition on their campuses.

Last week, English Premier League also adopted the definition “as part of its ongoing commitment to promote equality and diversity, and to combat discrimination of any form in football.”
