Union of foreign journalists slams PA’s “blatant behavior” against Washington Post journalists
Ramallah (QNN)- The union of foreign journalists condemned the assaults committed by PA’s security forces against two foreign journalists, who work for the Washington Post.
The union said it condemns “this blatant behavior in the strongest terms”. It also called on the Palestinian Authority for bringing those responsible for the incident into court and fulfill its commitments regarding respecting freedom of the press.
The union said that a group of PA security forces attacked, assaulted, and threatened two Washington Post journalists while they were covering protests in Ramallah last Saturday.
“When security forces repressed a protest that was calling for justice for the political activist Nizar Banat, a Palestinian policeman grabbed a photojournalist while he was on duty, confiscated his camera, and tore up his press card”, a statement by the union said.
One of the journalists told the policemen that he works for a foreign press institution but the policemen took the camera from him, according to the statement.
It added that the police held the camera for over an hour and deleted all photos from it. After they gave the camera back to the journalist, they told him that he will be in trouble if he publishes any photo showing officers.
