Under Russian mediation…Exchange deal to release Syrian prisoners in Israeli jails

Occupied Palestine (QNN) – The Palestinian Prisoners Association said that the Israeli Prison Administration (IPS) informed the Syrian prisoner Diab Qahmuz that he will be released within a deal with Syria, under Russian mediation.

The association stated, in a press release today, that the IPS informed Qahmuz that he would be released and moved to Syria.

Qahmuz, from the village of Ghajar in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for “collaborating with Hezbollah”. The Israeli occupation forces arrested him in 2016 along with three members of his family.

The Syrian regime had conducted an exchange deal with the Israeli occupation forces in April 2019 under Russian mediation. According to the deal, the body of the soldier Zakharia Bawmel, who was lost in the Sultan Yaqoub battle 1982, was delivered to the occupation state in exchange for the several prisoners, including Sidqi al-Maqt.

Syrian media had recently revealed that the Russian army had conducted searches in the cemetery of the Yarmouk refugee camp, looking for the bodies of Israeli soldiers who were lost in the Israeli aggression on Lebanon.

The Syrian state news agency SANA quoted unnamed sources as saying “the exchange deal is currently taking place through Russian mediation to release the prisoners Nihal Al-Maqt and Diab Qahmuz, from the occupied Golan, in exchange for the release of an Israeli girl who entered Quneitra by mistake and was arrested by Syrian authorities”.
