UN rapporteurs criticize ICC’s sluggish response to the situation in Gaza

Jerusalem (Quds News Network) – In a scathing critique, UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, and UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal, have lambasted the International Criminal Court (ICC) for its slow handling of war crimes committed by Israel in Gaza.
Albanese highlighted a Save The Children official’s alarming post on X, revealing that over 10 children per day have lost limbs on average since the conflict erupted three months ago.
“Trials will also be needed. Criminals who have planned, ordered, and executed such crimes must be brought to justice,” Albanese emphasized, calling for activation of national courts with jurisdiction over war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Rajagopal echoed the urgency, stating, “Yes, we need action now. Today. ICC is proving to be too slow.”
UN rapporteurs and human rights organizations denounced Israel’s recent attacks in Gaza as “genocide” and collective punishment.
Criticism mounted against ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan for failing to take preventive measures, including issuing arrest warrants against those responsible, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel’s offensive has resulted in the death of at least 22,800 Palestinians and injuries to over 58,400 others.
Gaza now faces severe devastation, with 60% of its infrastructure damaged or destroyed, and nearly 2 million residents displaced amid acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicines.
