UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly for Israel to end occupation of Palestine in one year
New York City (Quds News Network)- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has passed a resolution demanding that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories, with a decisive vote of 124-14 in favor, and 43 abstentions. The resolution, which is based on an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), calls for Israel to withdraw from the occupied territories within a year and implement measures such as an arms embargo and sanctions against the Israeli government.
Palestinian officials praised the vote as a historic step toward justice, with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas urging the international community to take action to enforce the resolution.
The resolution emphasizes that Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is illegal under international law and must be brought to an end without delay. It also calls for reparations to be made to Palestinians for the damages caused by the decades-long occupation. The ICJ had previously ruled that Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the eastern part of occupied Jerusalem are unlawful, stressing that Israel’s actions as an occupying power are a violation of international law.
The vote takes place amidst Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, which has resulted in over 41,250 deaths. The ICJ has also issued rulings demanding that Israel take steps to prevent genocide in Gaza and allow sufficient humanitarian aid into the besieged territory.
Despite widespread international support for the resolution, the United States voted against it, alongside Israel, Czechia, Hungary, Argentina, and several Pacific island nations. The US, which has traditionally backed Israel, opposed the resolution although it continues to claim that it advocates for a two-state solution.
