“This is a part of bringing my whole self to an institution that requires me to stay true to who I am as I work toward bringing transformative change to the community that raised me. My birthplace, Detroit + my family’s struggles, are the roots that center me on justice for all,” Tlaib wrote on Twitter.

In her first swearing-in ceremony, Tlaib, the first Palestinian Progressive Democrat to hold office and consistently defend the Palestinians, also wore the Palestinian thobe.
Many Palestinians feel like they finally have the opportunity to be truly represented in Washington.
Palestinian thobes are known for their red embroidered patterns. However, each thobe from every city or village is unique in its own ways. It tells a story and it stands out on its own.
Tlaib was born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents. Her mother is from the village of Beit Ur al-Fauqa near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, and her father is from Beit Hanina, in occupied East Jerusalem.
