Texas Governor Threatens San Marcos with Fund Cuts After City Moves to Redirect Millions in Tax Dollars from Israel to Local Priorities

Texas (Quds News Network)- Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to cut state funding for the city of San Marcos after its council proposed a resolution to redirect over $4.4 million in taxpayer money from Israel to local priorities.
The small city of 70,000 residents discovered that millions of their tax dollars are funneled to Israel annually. In response, the city council suggested reallocating the funds to essential services like housing, healthcare, and education.
Governor Abbott quickly condemned the move, calling it “antisemitic” and a violation of Texas state law, which bans government entities from supporting any boycott or embargo against Israel.
“Anti-Israel policies are anti-Texas policies,” Abbott wrote in a letter to Mayor Jane Hughson.
“Texas will not tolerate antisemitism.”
Abbott warned that if the resolution passes, the state will cancel existing grants and refuse to enter any future contracts with San Marcos. He also ordered state agencies to review all agreements with the city for possible violations.
Critics argue the governor’s threats undermine local democracy. Supporters of the resolution say they want their taxes to fund schools, infrastructure, and healthcare, not foreign military support.
The resolution, set for a vote on May 6, also calls for an arms embargo on Israel and supports permanent sovereignty for Palestinians in the occupied territories. It comes amid growing calls across the U.S. to end military support to Israel as its genocide in Gaza continues, with over 51,000 Palestinians killed since October 2023.
Abbott’s threat underscores a broader trend in U.S. politics: rising tension between local autonomy and state laws protecting Israel.
