Tel Aviv University Received Over Half a Billion Dollars in US Grants in 2023, Sparking Funding Concerns

Occupied Palestine (Quds News Network)- Tel Aviv University (TAU) received $615 million in grants from the US in 2023, according to its Form 990 filing. This document is required for tax-exempt organizations.

It remains unclear how much of the funding came from USAID or US taxpayers. Reports indicate that $462 million was spent on salaries and employee benefits.

Consistent US Funding Over the Years

Data from previous years shows a steady flow of US grants to the university. In 2022, TAU received $581 million. In 2021, it secured $613 million. A report by DataRepublican for the same year revealed that $379.3 million of the funding came from US taxpayers.

In 2020, the university received $566 million, while in 2019, it obtained $467 million. However, the exact portion of US government aid remains unclear for most years.

The funding has sparked criticism, particularly on social media. Users questioned why American taxpayers are supporting an Israeli institution while many US students struggle with student loan debt.

TAU has also faced past scrutiny over its ties to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute. The institute has been accused of unethical practices involving Palestinian corpses.
