Syrian army shelling kills at least 13, mostly children
The shelling came shortly following a bombing in Damascus that killed 14 soldiers.
Idlib (QNN)- At least 13 people, including ten children, have been killed, while nearly 40 others were wounded in a Syrian army shelling of residential areas of the rebel-held city of Arihah in Idlib province, according to witnesses and rescue workers.
The shelling from Syrian army outposts, which came shortly after a roadside bomb killed at least 14 military personnel in Damascus, fell on residential areas in the city in Idlib, killing ten children who were on their way to school, as well as, a teacher and a parent.
The Idlib region is home to nearly 3 million people, two-thirds of them displaced from other parts of the country.
Nearly 75% of the total population in the opposition-held Idlib region depends on humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs as 1.6 million people continue to live in camps or informal settlements, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.
The shelling came nearly an hour following a bombing in an army bus in Damascus, which killed 14 soldiers, according to state media.
The bus carrying troops was blown up near a bridge in the center of Damascus. A military source quoted by state media said two bombs had been attached to the vehicle in advance. Army engineers defused a third.
Attacks in Damascus have been rare since the army crushed rebel enclaves around the city with backing from Russia and Iran-backed forces in 2018.
