Statistic: Illiteracy rate in Palestine drops to 2.8%

Ramallah (QNN)- New statistic by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) stated Sunday on that Illiteracy rates among Palestinian population aged 15 years and above in Palestine fell from 13.9% in 1997 to 2.8% in 2018.

Israeli occupation and checkpoints failed to prevent Palestinians from establishing new records in literacy. The statistic, which has been issued on the occasion of International Literacy Day, stated that Palestinians succeeded reducing illiteracy rate to be one of the least illiterate countries in the world.

The rates dropped for males from 7.8% in 1997 to 1.3% in 2018, while it sharply dropped for females from 20.3% to 4.3% over the same period.

The continuous fatal wars on the Gaza strip did not seem to prevent Palestinians from sending their kids to schools; Gaza witnissed the lowest numbers with 2.0%, while the highest illiteracy rate among persons aged 15 years and above was in Salfit governorate with 5.4%, followed by Jericho and Al Aghwar governorate with 3.9%.
