A source within Hamas told Al Jazeera that al-Haddad died in an Israeli strike that targeted a residential building in western Gaza City on Friday evening.
The attack hit a building in the upscale Rimal neighborhood and killed at least seven Palestinians, including women and children, while nearly 50 others suffered injuries.
Large crowds gathered spontaneously in Gaza City to mourn the senior Qassam commander. Protesters carried his body through the streets while chanting slogans supporting the Palestinian resistance.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Friday that Israeli warplanes targeted al-Haddad in what they described as a direct operation ordered by both officials.
Al-Haddad ranked among the most prominent military leaders in Hamas. He joined the movement shortly after its founding in 1987 and later became commander of the Gaza Brigade following the killing of senior commander Mohammed Deif.
After Israel assassinated several top Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh, Yahya Sinwar, and Marwan Issa, Israeli authorities placed al-Haddad high on their wanted list and reportedly offered a $750,000 reward for information about him.
The assassination adds to hundreds of Israeli violations of Trump's Gaza ceasefire agreement announced in October 2025. According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, Israel committed more than 2,400 violations between October 2025 and April 2026, including airstrikes, shelling, shootings, and demolitions that killed hundreds of Palestinians.
