New York City’s New School Takes Unprecedented Step, Declares Hillel “In Bad Standing” and Cuts Funding Over Israel-Linked Programs

In an unprecedented move in New York City, the student government at The New School voted to place its Hillel chapter “in bad standing,” cutting funding and support over Israel-linked programs and violations of international law.

New York City (QNN)- The student government at The New School has passed a landmark resolution placing its campus Hillel chapter “in bad standing,” marking a first-of-its-kind action at a US university.

The vote blocks the New School Hillel and Baruch College Hillel from receiving student government funding, co-sponsorships, event support, or logistical assistance. The restrictions will remain in place unless the New School chapter cuts ties with Hillel International and ends programs that violate international law.

The decision followed a May 1 vote to adopt a detailed report prepared by the university’s Registered Student Organization Compliance Committee. The report found that Hillel chapters repeatedly breached the Student Senate’s Declaration of Principles, which requires all student groups to comply with international law.

According to the findings, Hillel participated in multiple programs that send students to Israel to volunteer on military bases and provide logistical support to the Israeli army during the genocide in Gaza. The report named initiatives such as “Hillel on Base,” “Onward Israel,” and the Volunteers for Israel (VFI) / Sar-El program.

Investigators also pointed to financial partnerships between Hillel-affiliated bodies and Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The report said these partnerships funded efforts to promote pro-Israel narratives on campus, which the conflict with the university’s principles.

As a result, the committee concluded that Hillel International stands in violation of the university’s rules and recommended disciplinary action. Student leaders adopted that recommendation and moved to restrict all institutional support for the affiliated chapters.

Jewish Voice for Peace welcomed the decision and described it as a major step toward accountability. The group said it hopes other universities will follow with similar measures.

Baruch College Hillel, which serves several campuses across New York City, has publicly identified itself as strongly Zionist and regularly organizes programming in support of Israeli policies.
