Washington (QNN)- A top envoy in the Trump administration asked FIFA to kick Iran out and replace it with Italy at the upcoming World Cup, according to the Financial Times. The proposal comes despite Italy failing to qualify for the tournament.
The report said the idea allegedly aimed to "improve diplomatic ties" between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after tensions linked to Trump’s criticism. The report cited people familiar with the discussions.
US special envoy Paolo Zampolli confirmed to the Financial Times that he raised the idea with Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He said Italy should take Iran’s place and described it as a “dream” scenario for Italian football fans. He also pointed to Italy’s four World Cup titles as justification for inclusion.
“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli told the newspaper.
The White House, FIFA, the Italian Football Federation, and Iran’s football federation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Italy missed qualification for the World Cup after a playoff defeat earlier this year, extending its absence from the tournament for a third consecutive edition.
Iran, meanwhile, reacted to the reports by stating it remains prepared to participate in the tournament, according to the Financial Times.
The reported US proposal adds a new political dimension to the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
