“Sewage water is all over the streets” in Gaza, UNICEF sounds alarm

Gaza (Quds News Network)- The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said the “appalling” hygiene conditions in Gaza were threatening children’s lives and health.
“Sewage water is all over the streets,” UNICEF spokesman Salim Oweis said from central Deir al-Balah, where untreated sewage run-off has formed large pools on the road.
“With the lack of clean water, the destruction of the sanitation system, sewage treatment systems, children and families are still struggling,” he said.

Recently, authorities in Deir al-Balah have predicted that “roads will be flooded by wastewater” and “diseases will spread” after it turned off sewage water pumping and treatment stations.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recorded more than 44,000 cases of diarrhea and 70,000 acute respiratory infections, but real numbers may be significantly higher.
