Senior US senator calls for transparent investigation into Abu Akleh’s killing

Occupied Palestine (QNN) – Senior US senator Mitt Romney on Monday called on the Biden’s administration to push for a full and transparent investigation into the killing of veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

In a rare move from a Republican Party politician, the pro-“Israel” senator sent a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging the state department to ensure accountability for the killing of Abu Akleh, which caused global outrage and condemnation.

“We insist that the administration ensure a full and transparent investigation is completed and that justice is served for Ms Akleh’s death,” said the letter, which was co-signed by Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia.

Al-Jazeera journalist Abu Akleh was shot in the head by Israeli occupation forces as she was covering an Israeli raid on Jenin’s refugee camp in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on May 11.

The letter demands detailed answers within 30 days, guaranteeing that the killing will remain in the public eye even as US President Joe Biden plans a visit to “Israel” in the coming month.

Romney’s letter underscores the pressure coming from US lawmakers. Last month, dozens of US legislators signed a letter demanding the FBI investigate the killing of Abu Akleh.

“The killing of a US citizen and of a journalist engaged in the work of reporting in a conflict zone is unacceptable,” the letter said.
