Security concerns in Israel as South Africa files war crimes lawsuit at ICJ

Jerusalem (Quds News Network) – Israeli security and government officials are on high alert following South Africa’s submission of a case to the International Court of Justice concerning Israel’s practice of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, Israeli daily Haaretz said in a report today.

The fear centers around the potential charge of genocide in Gaza that the Israeli security apparatus and prosecution anticipate from the international court.

Haaretz revealed today that both the Israeli military and the prosecution are gearing up to address this legal challenge. The Israeli Foreign Ministry is scheduled to hold a meeting today to discuss the matter.

South Africa filed the lawsuit on Friday, seeking action against Israel over its continuous war on Gaza since October 7. The International Court of Justice acknowledged South Africa’s request to file a lawsuit against the occupying state for violating the Genocide Prevention Convention.

In a statement, the court expressed that Israel’s actions have genocidal implications, targeting Palestinians in Gaza as part of a broader national and ethnic group – the Palestinians.

“Israel, through its entities, agents, and other individuals and entities acting on its instructions, under its direction or control, fails to fulfill its obligations under the Genocide Convention and is not holding accountable those inciting, directly and openly, to commit genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza,” the statement read.

The court further emphasized Israel’s failure since October 7, 2023, to prevent genocide and punish direct and public incitement to commit genocide. It accuses Israel of engaging and continuing to engage in acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
