Russia denounces Pompeo’s visit to Golan Heights
Moscow (QNN)- Russia denounced US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Golan Heights as another evidence of Washington’s “disdainful attitude” towards international law.
Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the US attempts to give legitimacy to the “illegal Israeli settlements” contradicts the UN Charter and the Security Council’s resolutions.
“We see this as another manifestation of the United States’ blatantly disdainful attitude to the globally recognized international legal principles of the Mideastern settlement,” Zakharova was quoted as saying by ANI.
Zakharova added, “US administration’s attempts to give legitimacy to the illegal Israeli settlements contradicts the United Nations Charter and the UN Security Council’s resolutions.”
She also declared that Russia considers the Golan Heights as an occupied territory by Israel and the Israeli settlements there to be constructed illegally.
Last week, Pompeo visited the Golan Heights in the first-ever visit by a US secretary of state, where he said that he chose to go to “tell the world that the US has it right, that Israel has it right, that each nation has the right to defend its sovereignty.”
Russia has also rejected illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank in Palestine.
“We would like to express particular concern about the decision of the Israel’s government to approve a large-scale plan to expand Israeli settlements in the West Bank,” said Zakharova last October after the occupation state decided to expand the settlements in the occupied West Bank.
