Ireland Approves Resolution to Ban Israel from Football Competitions
Dublin (QNN)- The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has approved a resolution calling on UEFA to suspend Israel from all European football competitions. The decision was made on Saturday during an extraordinary general meeting of the FAI. It passed with a clear majority; 74 votes in favor, seven against, and two abstentions. The resolution, proposed by Dublin’s Bohemians Football Club, states that the Israel Football Association (IFA) is breaching two key UEFA statutes. The first violation concerns the operation of Israeli football clubs inside occupied Palestinian territories without the consent of the Palestinian Football Association. The second cites the IFA’s failure to enforce an effective anti-racism policy. Bohemians FC led the push for the motion. The club’s Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Lambert, told Reuters, “These are very serious violations. Important rules are being ignored. We hope this motion gains support from other clubs in Ireland.” The FAI confirmed that it will now submit a formal request to UEFA’s executive committee to immediately suspend the Israel Football Association. UEFA has not yet commented on the Irish decision, and the IFA has issued no response. The Irish resolution follows earlier calls from football bodies in Turkey and Norway, which also urged UEFA to suspend Israel. Their appeals came after a group of United Nations experts recommended banning Israel from international football over the genocide in Gaza. The vote in Ireland comes amid rising criticism of Israel’s participation in European competitions. UEFA reportedly considered discussing a suspension in October 2024, but the idea was dropped after a ceasefire took effect in Gaza, brokered by the United States. Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
