Canberra (Quds News Network)- Australia's public broadcaster ABC unlawfully dismissed a journalist over a social media post about Israel’s genocide in Gaza, a court found Wednesday. Antoinette Lattouf said the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) cut short her stint as a fill-in radio presenter in December 2023 due to her political views, her race and after lobbying from pro-Israel groups. ABC apologised after being ordered to pay Antoinette Lattouf 70,000 Australian dollars (US$45,000) in compensation, with a further financial penalty yet to be decided. The broadcaster broke employment law by terminating her "for reasons including that she held political opinions opposing the Israeli military campaign in Gaza", Federal Court Justice Darryl Rangiah said in his ruling. Hours before her sacking, she shared on Instagram a Human Rights Watch video report on Israel’s Gaza assault with the comment: "HRW reporting starvation as a tool of war". ABC senior management's consternation over the post turned into a "state of panic", the judge said, and a decision was made to take her off the air "within the hour". Surrounded by supporters outside court, Lattouf said she was "punished for my political opinion". She added: "Deliberately starving and killing children is a war crime." "Today, the court has found that punishing someone for sharing facts about these war crimes is also illegal." During the case, the ABC claimed Lattouf was instructed not to post anything about the conflict but Justice Rangiah found Lattouf had been "merely advised not to post anything controversial", rather than being given a "direction". He said there was a clear "orchestrated campaign by pro-Israel lobbyists to have Lattouf taken off air" right from the outset of her employment, which was causing consternation among senior ABC managers.
