US on Ex-Official's Accusation of Israeli War Crimes: 'Everyone Has an Opinion'
Washington (Quds News Network)- US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce dismissed on Tuesday her predecessor Matthew Miller’s assertion that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza.
“On someone’s opinion about what Israel is or is not doing, everyone has an opinion,” Bruce said.
“And everyone has the right to express that opinion, but I’m not going to comment on what someone else thinks is going on elsewhere.”
Miller, the former spokesperson of the US State Department who spent months defending Israel’s war in Gaza, acknowledged that Israel has “without a doubt” committed war crimes in the Palestinian territory.
Miller told the Sky News Trump100 podcast on Monday, however, that he did not believe genocide was being carried out in Gaza. “I don’t think it’s a genocide, but I think it is – without a doubt – true that Israel has committed war crimes,” Miller said.
The ex-spokesperson served as one of the public faces of former President Joe Biden’s staunch support for Israel as it killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and flattened much of the enclave.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least 54,381 Palestinians have been killed and 124,054 wounded. Almost all of the enclave’s 2.3 million people have been displaced, while an Israeli blockade threatens famine.
During his time with the State Department, Miller regularly clashed with journalists who questioned the US response to Israel’s handling of Gaza, including bombings of medical facilities and camps sheltering Palestinian civilians.
In 2024, Miller rejected “unfounded” accusations of genocide in the Gaza Strip, referring to a report released by the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, which said Israel’s actions against Palestinians in Gaza have “crossed the threshold of committing ‘genocide’ against Palestinians in Gaza.”
He said Washington fully supports Israel on the issue without entering into a discussion of possible war crimes that Israel may have committed. Miller also accused Albanese of making “antisemitic statements.”
“We have made clear that we believe that allegations of genocide are unfounded. But at the same time, we are deeply concerned by the number of civilian casualties in Gaza, and that’s why we have pressed the government of Israel on multiple occasions to do everything it can to minimize those civilian casualties,” he added.
The administration of former President Joe Biden faced criticism for its policy of arming Israel, with critics saying that it violated U.S. laws prohibiting military aid and arms sales to countries involved in human rights abuses.
In November 2024, Associated Press journalist Matt Lee rebuked Miller for laughing during a question about Israel blocking aid to Gaza.
When asked about particular Israeli atrocities, including – for example – the killing of six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab last year, Miller would often say the US officials brought up the incident with their Israeli counterparts, who are investigating.
On the Sky News podcast, Miller appeared to criticise his own pattern of answering questions when he served as spokesperson. “We do know that Israel has opened investigations. But, look, we are many months into those investigations. And we’re not seeing Israeli soldiers held accountable,” he said.
Miller stressed in the interview that, as spokesman, he was not advocating his own opinion but expressing the official stance of Biden’s administration.
“You are a spokesperson for the president, the administration, and you espouse the positions of the administration,” he said. “And when you’re not in the administration, you can just give your own opinions.”
An Israeli group, whose founder supported US President Donald Trump’s plan to forcibly displace Palestinians from Gaza and was founded by soldiers and former intelligence officers, was behind last year’s flights that facilitated the travel of hundreds of Palestinians from the war-torn Strip and landed in South Africa and Indonesia, an AP investigation has found.
Israel is reportedly planning to further restrict the entry of aid into the war-torn Gaza Strip, despite the so-called ceasefire and amid an already severe humanitarian crisis after two years of genocide.
While presenting the Oscar for Best International Film, Javier Bardem began his remarks by saying, “not to war and free Palestine,” drawing a loud round of applause from the audience at the March 15 awards ceremony.
