Israeli Military Orders Evacuation of Northern Gaza’s Only Partially Functioning Hospital
Gaza (Quds News Network)- The Israeli military has ordered the forced evacuation of al-Awda Hospital in northern Gaza, the only remaining partially functioning hospital in the area, despite it being overwhelmed and operating under dire conditions amid the ongoing Israeli assault, the Ministry of Health said Thursday.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also said “efforts are ongoing to move the patients and the medical staff” out of al-Awda Hospital after Israel ordered them to evacuate.
“Al-Awda is the only remaining partially functioning hospital in north Gaza,” Stephane Dujarric told reporters.
“The facility is currently overwhelmed with injuries and critically low on supplies,” he said.
The Israeli military has repeatedly targeted hospitals and health facilities across Gaza since it began its assault in October 2023, pushing the healthcare system to the brink of total collapse.
Between 1 and 22 May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) documented 29 Israeli attacks on health care in the Gaza Strip, further disrupting access to health care and overburdening hospitals that remain partially operational.
According to WHO, at least 94 per cent of hospitals in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed. Furthermore, over the past two weeks, the functionality of health service points has severely deteriorated.
Since 14 May, four partially functional hospitals had to suspend operations, reducing the number of partially functional hospitals from 22 to 18, while the number of fully and partially functional primary health-care centres declined from 75 to 61.
Between 15 and 23 May, Al-Awda Hospital was repeatedly hit. After both the Indonesian and Kamal Adwan hospitals went out of service, Al-Awda became the only hospital in the governorate that remains partially functional.
On 21 May, the hospital’s third floor was reportedly hit, injuring a staff member.
Israeli attacks in the area also damaged the hospital’s water tank and pipeline.
On 22 May, the hospital’s third and fourth floors were also hit, injuring two health workers. Patient tents caught fire, which also burned all medical supplies in the warehouse and destroyed vehicles in the basement.
