UN: Injuries at Gaza Aid Hub Caused by Israeli Gunfire
Gaza (Quds News Network)- Ten Palestinians were killed and 62 others injured on Tuesday as crowds gathered to receive food aid in Rafah, southern Gaza. A United Nations official said they appeared to be caused by Israeli military gunfire. The violence erupted near a newly established aid hub in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood. The hub is operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US-Israeli aid group. The GHF aid mechanism bypasses the United Nations and has sparked global controversy. The Israeli army denied targeting the hub directly. In a statement, it claimed that troops “did not carry out any aerial fire toward the humanitarian aid distribution center.” However, it admitted to firing “warning shots in the area outside the compound” to control the crowd and ensure continued aid distribution. At a press briefing in Geneva, UN spokesperson Ajith Sunghay said the injuries resulted from gunshots, adding that the shots seemed to come from Israeli forces. The UN is still verifying details. Video footage captured the chaos. Dozens of people rushed the fenced-off hub. Part of the fence appeared torn down. A military helicopter flew overhead, firing flares. In another clip, panicked crowds can be seen fleeing. Loud bangs that sound like gunfire echo in the background. GHF said in a statement that the American private security contractors overseeing the site briefly withdrew amid the disorder. This allowed “a small number of Gazans to take aid safely and dissipate,” the group claimed. UN agencies and aid groups condemned the incident. Most international humanitarian organizations have refused to work with the GHF. They stress that the new aid mechanism undermines core humanitarian principles. They fear it could lead to forced displacement, as many Gazans are compelled to relocate closer to the southern aid hubs and as the news aid plan is part of Israel’s military operation dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots.” Two senior GHF officials resigned earlier this week. One cited concerns that the organization’s actions “do not align with humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.”
