UNIFIL requests Lebanese army withdraw from border positions ahead Israeli ground invasion
Beirut (Quds News Network) — The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reportedly requested the Lebanese army to vacate several of its positions along the southern border in preparation for the expected Israeli ground invasion. The request was made through UNIFIL, according to Lebanese media reports on Monday evening.
Both Al-Jadeed TV and An-Nahar newspaper confirmed that the Lebanese army began the withdrawal of forces from key posts near the Israeli border earlier in the evening.
According to sources from An-Nahar, the Lebanese army pulled back from its post in Abu Shnan, near Qatmoun in the Rmeish area, redeploying its forces to other locations further away from the border. The repositioning was carried out to avoid direct confrontation with Israeli forces during the anticipated invasion.
A Lebanese security official told Reuters that the Lebanese forces had moved at least five kilometers north of the southern border with Israel. Local residents, as well as additional security sources, confirmed seeing the military’s withdrawal from various border posts.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated on Monday that the next phase of military operations along Lebanon’s southern border would commence soon. During a meeting with local council leaders in northern Israel.
US media outlets have reported that Israeli special forces may have already conducted limited incursions into Lebanese territory. According to CNN, Israeli commandos carried out covert operations in southern Lebanon in recent days, according to sources familiar with the situation.
US Vice President JD Vance claimed that more humanitarian aid is now entering the Gaza Strip than at any time in the past five years. Palestinians, however, rejected this claim, confirming that Israel continues to impose restrictions on the entry of aid despite the ceasefire.
France has rejected a visa to prominent human rights advocate and Director-General of Al-Haq, Shahwan Jabarin, who was scheduled to address the European Parliament’s human rights committee in Strasbourg, a move that “undermining efforts towards accountability and advocacy for Palestinian rights.”
The US Senate blocked on Wednesday two resolutions that would have stopped the sale of some $450 million in bombs and bulldozers to Israel, amid the assaults on Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
