South African public figures call for sanctions in response to annexation
Cape Town (QNN) - More than 250 prominent South Africans have endorsed an anti-annexation statement by the South African Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (SA BDS), opposing unilateral plans by “Israel” to annex parts of the occupied West Bank. The South African government should spearhead a campaign in the UN to impose sanctions against Israel for its violations of international law, its denial of the Palestinian right to self-determination and its forceful and violent annexation of Palestinian territory, according to the statement. The statement holds the Israeli government, the U.S. and Western allies accountable for “this relentless process of de facto annexation”, which has eroded any possibility for a just and lasting peace based on international law and UN resolutions on the question of Palestine. Coalition Global South call include former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, former Mozambican Minister Oscar Monteiro, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, General Secretary of the South African Federation of Trade Unions Zwelinzima Vavi, and former Commissioner at SA Human Rights Commission Pregs Govender. On 1 July, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is threatening that Israel will commence the annexation of a large part of Palestinian territory in the West Bank – in accordance with US President Trump's plan. This planned annexation of 30% of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley will culminate years of gradual theft and occupation through the appropriation of land, the forcible displacement of the Palestinian population and the settling of Israelis in the occupied territories.
