Poll: 50% of Americans support conditioning military aid to ‘Israel’

Chicago (QNN)- A new poll by the 2021 Chicago Council Survey revealed that 50% of Americans support conditioning military aid to the occupation state of Israel and prohibit its use in military operations against Palestinians.

While a majority of Democrats favor these restrictions (62%, 32% oppose), Republicans are nearly the mirror opposite, with six in 10 opposing them (61%, 32% favor).

The new poll, which comes ahead of the Israeli Prime Minister, Neftali Bennett’s, first visit to Washington, also showed a majority of 58% of Americans supporting that the US should not intervene in the Middle East.

The US is Israel’s main donor. In 2020, the US gave $3.8bn (£2.7bn) in aid to the occupation state- part of a long-term, yearly commitment made under the Obama administration. Almost all of this aid was for military assistance.

This support came as part of an agreement signed by former President Barack Obama in 2016 for an overall package of $38bn (26.8bn) in military aid over the decade 2017-2028.

This represents an increase of about 6% (adjusted for inflation) over the spending commitment for the previous decade.
