Occupied Jerusalem (QNN)- Large numbers of colonial Israeli settlers broke into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied city of Jerusalem on Wednesday morning, while being backed by heavily-armed Israeli forces, to mark the so-called Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

Local sources reported that at approximately 7am local time, well-armed Israeli occupation soldiers raided the mosque to make way for settlers to break into the holy site.

The forces attacked Palestinian worshipers inside the mosque, raided the prayer halls, blockaded worshipers inside the al-Qibli Mosque and arrested some worshipers to empty the courtyards of its worshipers to secure the settlers’ entry.

Jerusalem’s Islamic Waqf confirmed that hundreds of Israeli settlers broke into the mosque in groups , each group consisted of 40 settlers, performed Talmudic rituals and listened to Talmudic explanations, marking the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur which takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The settlers stormed the mosque through the Al-Mughrabi Gate, one of the Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem and is under full-Israeli control, and left it through the Al-Silsila Gate.

Strict closure has been imposed today in the occupied city of Jerusalem by Israeli occupation authorities, as the forces placed blocks and checkpoints in several main streets in order to provide more protection for the settlers as they stormed the mosque. Great numbers of Israeli soldiers have also deployed in the Old City streets and in its vicinity.

Israeli settlers are expected to break into the mosque in the upcoming weeks in great numbers as they mark Yom Kippur on October 5 and Sukkot between 10 and 17 October.

Last month, 4,426 extremist Israeli settlers broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to Al-Qastal, a Palestinian network hub for Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem. The most serious break-ins were during the so-called Jewish New Year, which started on September 26 and ended on September 27.
