Palestinian icon Ahed Tamimi to join pro-Palestinian march in London
London (QNN)- Prominent Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi is set to join thousands of pro-Palestinian protests in London on Saturday as part of a national protest for Palestine and demanding Israel be held accountable for violations of international law.
The 18-year-old Palestinian activist came to the world’s attention after she was filmed slapping soldiers at the entrance to her home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank. She was just 16 at the time and was subsequently sentenced to eight months in jail, as part of a plea deal where she admitted to aggravated assault of the solider and incitement.
This weekend’s march is organised by Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the Stop the War Coalition, the Palestinian Forum in Britain, Friends of al-Aqsa and the Muslim Association of Britain.
The groups have cited Israel’s “Nation State Law,” which effectively enshrines discrimination against Palestinians into the constitution.
They have also condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s re-election promise to annex the West Bank as well as US President Donald Trump’s impending “Deal of the Century” that intends to create a “New Palestine.”
The protest comes just a week after one of the deadliest bombing assaults on Gaza since 2014, which saw at least 25 Palestinians killed, including several babies and children. It is also timed to coincide with Nakba or “Catastrophe” Day, remembering the day when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to leave their homes in 1948 while Zionist militias committed genocide against them to create Israel.
Organisers of “National Demonstration for Palestine” said that she will join MPs including Diane Abbott, Richard Burgon and Lloyd Russell-Moyle in Saturday’s march, which will start at Portland Place at noon.
