Palestinian Detainee Dies Due to Medical Negligence in Israeli Prison: Advocacy Groups
Occupied Palestine (Quds News Network)- A Palestinian detainee died this week in an Israeli prison due to medical negligence after being denied treatment, prisoner advocacy groups announced on Monday, marking the 55th Palestinian to die in Israeli custody since the start of the Gaza genocide.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) and the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs said in a statement that Moataz Mahmoud Abu Zneid, 35, had been suffering from severe health problems but did not receive medical care until he fell into a coma on 6 January. His death was announced on Sunday at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, occupied Palestine.
According to his family, Abu Zneid had not suffered from any health problems before his arrest on 27 June 2023.
"The prison administration deliberately delayed transferring him to the hospital and perpetrated a medical crime against him," the two groups said.
"Abu Zneid's case... constitutes a new crime in the record of the Israeli brutality system."
Abu Zneid, a 35-year-old resident of the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, has previously gone on hunger strikes in protest against his administrative detention.
His death brings the total number of known Palestinians to have died in Israeli detention since the start of the Israeli assault on Gaza to 55, according to the two groups.
The groups noted that since the start of the assault there has been a rise in the number of fatalities amongst Palestinian prisoners, who are living through a "humanitarian catastrophe" in Israeli prisons.
They added that prisoners endure torture, starvation, sexual assault, medical negligence, as well as being held in poor conditions, which leads to their deteriorating health.
Israeli police barred Al-Aqsa preacher Sheikh Ekrima Sabri from Friday prayers without explanation, triggering sharp condemnation over the unlawful restrictions on worship in occupied Jerusalem.
US Vice President JD Vance claimed that more humanitarian aid is now entering the Gaza Strip than at any time in the past five years. Palestinians, however, rejected this claim, confirming that Israel continues to impose restrictions on the entry of aid despite the ceasefire.
France has rejected a visa to prominent human rights advocate and Director-General of Al-Haq, Shahwan Jabarin, who was scheduled to address the European Parliament’s human rights committee in Strasbourg, a move that “undermining efforts towards accountability and advocacy for Palestinian rights.”
