PA forces assaulted 6 journalists covering anti-corruption protests

Occupied Palestine (QNN)- The Palestinian Authority forces yesterday assaulted six journalists who were covering anti-corruption protests following the killing of activist Nizar Banat by PA forces.

The PA forces assaulted 6 Palestinian journalists while they were covering anti-government protests in Ramallah following the PA’s killing of the activist Nizar Banat early Thursday during his arrest.

The forces confiscated the journalists’ cell phones, trying to prevent them from covering the forces’ suppression of the protesters.

The six journalists are: Najlaa Zaitoun, Shatha Hammad, Saja Alami, Faiha’a Khanfar, Kareem Khamaisi, and Mohammad Gefrei.

Nizar Banat’s killing by Palestinian Authority forces early Thursday during his arrest has been met with anger on the streets and condemnation from Palestinian factions and human rights organizations.

Nizar, an outspoken critic of the Palestinian Authority who had intended to run in parliamentary elections before they were cancelled earlier this year, died during his arrest by PA forces early Thursday.

In a brief statement, the Hebron governorate said his “health deteriorated” when a force of the security services went to arrest him early Thursday.

It said he was taken to a hospital where he was later announced dead, as around 25 Palestinian security forces stormed the home where Nizar was staying, blowing out doors and windows, beating Nizar with an iron bar and sprayed pepper spray in his eyes before undressing him and dragging him away to a vehicle.

In response, Palestinians have rallied to the streets to express their anger and condemnation while chanting against the PA president, Mahmoud Abbas.

The protestors have also called to conduct a comprehensive investigation into what happened and to ensure that those responsible for Banat’s death were punished.

“We call for the killers to be prosecuted,” they chanted.

However, the PA forces were suppressing the protesters and violently attacked them.

Also, yesterday, the PA’s forces dressed in civilian clothes, walking in the peaceful protests and brutally assaulting the protesters using batons and stones.

They were also seen intensively throwing tear gas bombs at the protesters.
