Over 50,000 Palestinian children arrested by ‘Israel’ since 1967, watchdog says
Occupied Palestine (QNN)- Israeli occupation has arrested more than 50,000 Palestinian children since 1967, the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ Affairs said in a report issued on Sunday.
Marking World Children’s Day, which is celebrated today, the Commission said that Israeli occupation has arrested more than 50,000 children since 1967 and about 20,000 since 2000.
This day coincides with the date of declaring children's rights in November 20, 1959 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, and the agreement on child's rights in November 20, 1989.
The Commission pointed out that 9000 Palestinian children have been arrested since 2015.
770 Palestinian children have been arrested since the start of the year, including 119 were arrested jn October alone, most of them in the occupied city of Jerusalem.
It added that there are currently 160 Palestinian children and minors, all under the age of 18, held in the Israeli occupation prisons of Damon, Ofer, and Megiddo.
Among the 160 children and minors are three girls, two of them are 16 years old and the third is 17 years old.
Five minors are currently held under Israel’s administrative detention without charge or trial and based on secret evidence.
The Commission said the children have been held in Israeli occupation prisons under harsh conditions and are deprived of basic human rights which are stated in the international agreements and conventions on the rights of children.
The Commission added that most of the children were arrested from their homes during night raids and others were arrested in the streets or while they were on their way to school or back home.
They have been exposed to all kinds of torture, physically and psychologically.
The Commission mentioned the 2015 arrest of 13-year-old Ahmed Manasra, now 20 years old, and his 15-year-old cousin as they were allegedly accused of stabbing two Israeli settlers in the Pisgat Ze’ev settlement in the occupied West Bank.
Following his arrest, video footage, widely circulated on media, showed a young, distressed Ahmed being harshly treated and severely interrogated without the presence of his parents or legal representative.
After he had turned 14 years old in 2016, Ahmed was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to 12 years in prison, although the law at the time when the crime was allegedly committed in 2015 did not permit the imprisonment of minors under the age of 14. The sentence was later reduced to nine and a half years. His mental condition has, reportedly, steadily deteriorated, possibly due to the harsh conditions of his detention, the recurrent instances of solitary confinement and, more tragically, the solitude away from his family.
The Commission also noted that the Israeli authorities tend to target Palestinian children by murder and arrest, as many of them have been killed. The arrests included males, females, injured and sick persons.
The report showed the role of the unjust Israeli courts, which do not take into consideration the situation under which the children confessed, and without taking into account the harshness of torture they were subjected to. However, the courts issue high sentences, which often are accompanied with fines , that constitutes a further burden on detainees' families.
The Commission called on the (UNICEF) and all international organisations specialised in human and children rights to intervene immediately and protect Palestinian children from the increased Israeli targeting, and release all minors from the Israeli prisons and stop the arbitrary arrest against them, especially that the international law has guaranteed a decent and safe life for children.
