Netanyahu Appoints Settler as Israel’s Ambassador to Washington Ahead of Trump’s Return

Washington DC (Quds News Network)- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yehiel Leiter, a prominent settler and his former aide, as Israel’s new ambassador to Washington. The decision comes as the United States prepares for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, who secured a second term in this week’s elections.

Leiter will replace the outgoing ambassador Mike Herzog, whose term officially ends on January 20. According to Netanyahu’s office, Leiter is set to take on his new role as Trump returns to the White House.

In an official statement, Netanyahu’s office highlighted Leiter’s experience in Netanyahu’s far-right government, having served as Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Education, Chief of Staff for the Minister of Finance, and Acting Chairman of the Israel Ports Company. The statement emphasized Leiter’s ‘deep familiarity’ with the American administration and society, noting that he is an American colonizer and has substantial connections within American circles.

According to the Hebrew-language site Jewish Insider, Leiter is a resident of the Eli settlement in the occupied West Bank. Known for his hardline views and strong support for the settlement movement.

Political analysts suggest that Leiter’s selection signals Netanyahu’s intent to align closely with Trump’s anticipated hardline policies on the Palestine. With Trump previously known for his pro-Israel stance, particularly in relation to settlements and potential annexation efforts, Leiter’s appointment is expected to pave the way for closer coordination on these contentious issues.

If Trump follows through on his previous commitments, Leiter could play a crucial role in facilitating US support for internationally illegal settlement expansion and the possible annexation of parts of the occupied territories.
