Malaysia denies claim of joining Abraham Accords, normalizing ties with ‘Israel’
Putrajaya (QNN)- Malaysia has stated that it “categorically rejects” a statement reportedly made by an Israeli minister during a recent interview with Emirati website Erem News that claimed it may join the so-called Abraham Accords and normalize relations with ‘Israel’.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdulllah said in a statement last Wednesday that “Malaysia stands by our unwavering commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause and their struggle against the continued Israeli illegal occupation and systematic oppression.”
Saifuddin pointed out that Malaysia would continue to pursue actively the Palestinian agenda bilaterally, as well as in various regional and international fora towards realising the Palestinian peoples’ aspiration for freedom and for their independent state of Palestine.
“Malaysia’s continuous support for the Palestinian struggle is also in recognition of the aspirations of the new generation of Palestinian fighters and activists,” he added.
Saifuddin said Malaysia would also continue to provide political and moral support, as well as humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people bilaterally and through international organisations such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as well as facilitating the works of Malaysian civil society organisations for Palestinians.
“For many decades already, the Palestinian people have been suffering discriminatory policies, denial of basic human rights, imposition of harsh living conditions, as well as confiscation of their land and property,” continue the statement.
It added, “These and other inhumane acts committed by Israel, the occupying power, against the Palestinians are tantamount to the crime of Apartheid and clearly inconsistent with the pursuit of peace and peaceful co-existence in the region.”
According to media reports, Israel’s Minister of Regional Cooperation Issawi Frej on Monday announced that Oman, Tunisia, Qatar, and Malaysia might join the Abraham Accords.
The UAE was the first country to agree to normalize ties with the occupation state last year under the so-called Abraham Accords, a pact brokered by the United States, a move that was followed by Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan.
Palestinians condemned the normalization agreements, saying they encouraged Israel’s denial of their rights and do not serve the Palestinian cause.
Abu Dhabi said the deal was an effort to stave off Israel’s planned annexation of the occupied West Bank, however, opponents believe normalization efforts have been in the offing for many years as Israeli officials have made official visits to the UAE and attended conferences in the country which had no diplomatic or other ties with the occupation state.
