Luxembourg: EU would inevitably recognize Palestine if ‘Israel’ “steals” West Bank lands

Luxembourg (QNN)- Luxembourg’s foreign minister, Jean Asselborn, said that the European Union’s recognition of Palestine will become “inevitable” if the occupation state moves ahead with the annexation of parts of the West Bank.
In an interview with Der Spiegel, Asselborn called for a united EU stance against the Israeli annexation plans.
“To write reproachful letters would be a humiliation for the EU and would significantly weaken its credibility,” he said.
“The recognition of Palestine. This debate would gain a whole new dynamic; I would even consider it inevitable,” Asselborn added, noting that such a decision would not require a unanimous decision by all 27 member states.
Asselborn also stated that if more EU members recognize Palestine, ” it would likely achieve much more than economic sanctions”.
Comparing the Israeli annexation of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley to Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula, Asselborn called the Israeli plans a violation of international law.
“I see no difference at all. Annexation is annexation. It is a gross violation of international law,” he said.
“One could also say that an annexation violates the seventh of the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt not steal. An annexation of parts of the West Bank would be just that: stealing,” he added.
