Israel’s Top Court Rejects Petition by Families of Israeli Prisoners to Restore Electricity to Gaza

Israel’s Supreme Court has rejected a petition filed by families of Israeli prisoners. The petition demanded the government restore electricity to Gaza.

Justice Alex Stein dismissed the case outright. He said the matter is not for judicial review and lies solely with political leaders. “Tel Aviv is under no obligation to supply electricity to Gaza,” he stated.

Deputy Chief Justice Noam Sohlberg said hearing the case might “wrongly suggest” it is a legal issue open to debate.

Energy Minister Eli Cohen welcomed the ruling. In a post on X, he praised the immediate rejection of the petition. He called the decision “morally and security-wise correct” and urged what he referred to as “continued pressure on Hamas” to release the prisoners.

Israel stopped power supply to Gaza on March 9. The move followed Israel’s assaults that marked the breakdown of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal with the resistance. It also marked the resumption of Israel’s genocide in the besieged territory.

Hamas has repeatedly warned that Israeli prisoners will live the same suffering that Palestinians in Gaza live. Any power cut or blocking of humanitarian aid will directly harm them.

Families of Israeli prisoners had turned to the court after the blackout. But the court sided with the government’s stance.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has waged a genocide in Gaza with U.S. support. Over 166,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured. Most of the victims are women and children. Thousands remain missing under the rubble.
