Israel’s Genocide in Gaza Risks Erasing Palestinians as a Group, Says UN Official

Gaza (Quds News Network)- Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza is pushing Palestinians toward conditions that threaten their existence as a group, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk warned.

Reported plans to forcibly expel Gaza’s population into a small area in the south, along with threats by Israeli leaders to deport Palestinians outside the Strip, have deepened fears of mass displacement and ethnic cleansing.

For over 19 months, Israel has waged a brutal assault that has killed over 52,000 Palestinians, most of whom are women and children. The occupation state also announced expanding its offensive — a move almost certain to trigger more deaths, mass displacement, and destruction of what little remains of Gaza’s infrastructure.

The misery is deepened by a complete blockade. For nearly nine weeks, no basic goods — not even food — have been allowed into Gaza. Israel has bombed food kitchens and attacked anyone trying to maintain public safety. Using hunger as a method of war is a war crime under international law.

In the same vein, UN experts warned that the genocide in Gaza mark a decisive moral turning point for the world. States must act now to end the violence, they said, or risk being complicit in the annihilation of Gaza’s population — a catastrophe with irreversible consequences for global humanity and the rule-based order. “While States debate definitions — is it genocide or not — Israel continues its campaign of mass killing with total impunity,” the experts said.

Since the collapse of the ceasefire in March 2025, Israel has intensified its attacks by land, air, and sea. March 18 alone saw 600 deaths in 24 hours — 400 of them children. “No one is spared,” the experts said. “Not children, not the disabled, not even doctors, journalists, or hostages.” Gaza has become a graveyard for civilians, and the siege has pushed its remaining 2.1 million people into starvation, disease, and collapse.

Gaza’s natural resources have been destroyed, and essential supplies cut off for months. “This is not just a violation of humanitarian obligations,” the experts said. “It’s a pattern of genocidal conduct, calculated and criminal.” The warnings come as hunger spreads, mental trauma soars, and entire families are erased.

They called on governments to stop hiding behind diplomatic language and take enforceable actions now. “The world is watching,” they said. “Will Member States meet their legal obligations or continue enabling war crimes through silence and arms transfers?” With the ICC considering arrest warrants and the ICJ calling for an end to the occupation by September 17, the experts said the choice is clear: stop the slaughter or risk complicity in genocide.
