Israel’s parliament approved the largest budget in the occupation state’s history, worth approximately $169 billion. The budget passed with 66 votes in favor and 52 against, narrowly preventing Netanyahu’s government from collapsing. Had it failed, the administration of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a war criminal wanted bu the ICC, would have dissolved, triggering early elections.
The budget debate was heated. Opposition Knesset members called it “the biggest robbery in Israel’s history.” Protesters outside the Knesset blocked roads, demanding a ceasefire and the return of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza. Security forces cleared the demonstrators before the vote.
A War Budget at Any Cost
The 2025 budget heavily favors Israel’s war machine. War spending has surged to $30 billion, the highest in Israel’s 77-year existence. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich defended the spending, saying, “This is a war budget, and it will bring victory.”
The government allocated an additional $150 million to global propaganda efforts. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called it “as essential as weapons on the battlefield.” Meanwhile, funding for settler needs, including rehabilitation programs for border settlements affected by the war, was cut.
War Ensures Netanyahu’s Survival
Netanyahu desperately needed to pass this budget to maintain his grip on power. His extreme far-right allies, especially National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, threatened to oppose it unless Israel continued its genocide in Gaza. Netanyahu complied, escalating attacks in the days leading up to the vote.
Israeli airstrikes killed over 400 Palestinians overnight, including 200 children and entire families. The death toll since the resumption of the genocide has reached 792 deaths.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid accused Netanyahu of prioritizing political survival over Israeli prisoners, calling the budget “a deal with extremists at the expense of the middle class.”
Israel Feeding on Palestinian Blood
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has cost $31 billion so far. The Israeli economy is in crisis, with a record budget deficit and a 20.7% contraction in GDP. To compensate, the government has raised taxes and cut services for native Palestinians while funneling billions into military spending and settlements.
Palestinians continue to suffer the most. The budget enables more attacks on Gaza, more land seizures in the West Bank, and more oppression of native Palestinians inside Israel. Every dollar spent on war strengthens Netanyahu’s coalition but comes at the cost of innocent lives.
This budget is more than just numbers—it is built on Palestinian blood.

On April 17 each year, Palestinian Prisoners’ Day is observed to highlight the plight of thousands of Palestinian men, women, and children held in Israeli prisons.
