Israeli Warplanes Fly Over Nasrallah’s Funeral to Taunt Hezbollah Supporters
Beirut (Quds News Network)- Israeli warplanes flew over Beirut on Sunday during the funeral of Hezbollah’s former Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in a move seen as a deliberate taunt. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the aerial presence, calling it a “clear message” to Hezbollah and its supporters.
Katz stated that the flyover was meant to threaten anyone who threats the occupation state. He added that those who attack Israel would “meet their end.” The act was widely interpreted as an attempt to mock Hezbollah and its followers during their mourning.
Thousands of supporters gathered in Beirut to mourn Nasrallah and senior Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine. Both were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Mourners from across Lebanon and the world walked toward Camille Chamoun Sports City, where the funeral took place. Major roads leading to Beirut, including the Sidon-Beirut and Bekaa-Beirut highways, saw heavy traffic despite stormy weather.
After the ceremony, the procession moved toward the burial site near the airport road. The event marked Hezbollah’s first mass gathering since the recent Israeli assaults on Lebanon.
Hezbollah’s current leader, Naim Qassem, declared that “resistance continues” despite the ceasefire. He insisted that the US would not dictate Lebanon’s future, adding, “What you failed to take by war, you will not take by politics.”
Israel killed Nasrallah in an airstrike on September 27, 2024, and later targeted Safieddine on October 3. The Israeli assaults escalated as part of its attacks on several countries in the region after they announced their support for Gaza against the Israeli genocide. A ceasefire was reached in Lebanon on November 27, 2024.
