Israeli Military Aircraft Hovered Over Malta Amid Gaza Flotilla Incident, Authorities Concerned

"This is very serious," said a military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Velletta (Quds News Network)- An Israeli military aircraft flew over Malta on Thursday hours before an attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, reported the Times of Malta. The C-130 Hercules spent approximately three hours in Maltese airspace before returning to Israel. Flight tracker ADS-B Exchange reported the aircraft’s movements, which included low-altitude maneuvers over Hurd’s Bank, east of the island.

A military source, speaking anonymously to the Times of Malta, expressed serious concerns about the unauthorized flight over Malta, an EU member state. “This is a breach of our neutrality,” the source stated.

Hours later, the Gaza Freedom Flotilla issued an SOS signal. Activists said that their vessel, Conscience, came under drone attack just outside Maltese waters. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Freedom Flotilla aims to end the blockade on Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid through non-violent means. Israel has been carrying out a starvation campaign against over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.

Among the activists in Malta were prominent figures like Greta Thunberg and retired US Army Colonel Mary Ann Wright. They awaited their chance to board the Gaza-bound vessel.

Activists worry this incident may echo the tragic events of May 2010, when Israeli forces raided Freedom Flotilla vessels, resulting in the deaths of nine peaceful activists.

The Freedom Flotilla reported the distress signal was sent just after midnight when the Israelis attacked. Images shared by the NGO showed damage to the vessel, with two punctures visible.

The Maltese government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the Israeli aircraft.
